How did Dimmesdale die? Was it the stress to his heart from these sins, or was it Chillingworths doing? I guess we will never know. It is very sad that Hester and Dimmesdale did not have the opportunity to spend their lives together, like they wanted to. The message I want my descendants to receive from this to never hide from your sins. If you do something wrong, then you need to fess up and admit your wrong doing. I hope that my family and the family to come will never make mistakes like these. In this small town everyone knows everything and I am very surprised that Dimmesdale's and Hester's secret was kept for as long as it was. I guess another lesson that can be learned from this is if you sleep with your minister, have a kid, and still have a husband you should probably spill the beans because if you don't, the minister will probably die.

It is very sad indeed that Hester and Dimmesdale did not get to the live the life ahead of them, as I believe that once they had left their reputations and sins behind, they truly could have been happy. I also think that it's very important to be held responsible for your sins, if not by the community or the church, by yourself. Perhaps the reason that Dimmesdale died was his overwhelming guilt of not confessing to a crime that was equally his? I think your last sentiment is very truthful, and perhaps another lesson is: when you get a woman pregnant and she's forced to live estranged from the town and in public scorn, maybe you should also take responsibility. I believe that everything that happened with Hester, Dimmesdale, and even Chillingworth truly exemplifies what can happen in a society when people are averted to forgiveness and humanity, and openly condemn people for their sins. I can only hope that our humble town will be better in the future, and never treat anyone as harshly as we did Hester.

I agree with you Ross. But i think that our little town treated Hester unfairly just because she had made a mistake. Granted, it was a large mistake, We should have forgives her and moved on and not treat her as so much of an outcast in our community. If only we knew how Dimmesdale die. I feel so horrible for Hester that he was never really there for her like he should have been to help raise Pearl, she needed a father figure.

That is a good point in saying that we will never know why Dimmesdale truly died. I think that our town should send Hester a gift basket. We could put some necessities for her and Pearl in it.

I thought that the ending was very sad indeed and I wish, like you, that Dimmesdale and Chilkinhsworth could've spent their happy lives together. What you mentioned as a lesson from this event was very smart of you and I completely agree. If you do something wrong, you need to fess up about it. Hiding it is only going to hurt you in the end. Hopefully everyone in this community can realize this. Also I hope that people in this town realize that even though they think they know everything about everyone, they don't.

I totally agree. The extreme amount of stress Dimmesdale had to be experiencing had to be taxing on his body. To hold a secret that nobody knows about and that secret being a sin would put anyone at unease. I wish that he could have just told someone who wouldn't rat him out. That would have made a difference in my opinion. Hopefully the people in Boston do not make the same mistake Dimmesdale commited.
