"Not just by what you've told me. The student would have to come forward, give evidence, something. They can't go jailing someone on just a story" (West, 98).
This quote is important to the book because it shows a couple important character traits that Cal and Gretchen possess. The trait that Cal shows is friendship and friendship development. In the beginning in the novel, Cal hated Gretchen; he thought she was weird, creepy and just a stupid girl, but now, he thinks differently. He cares so much about Gretchen that he wants to help her, without making her feel bad about herself. He goes to the councilor, without revealing who he is talking about, asks him what the repercussions are for domestic violence. Obviously, from this quote, the council pretty much says unless Gretchen comes forward, nothing can be done. The trait that Gretchen is revealing is trust for Cal. This is a very touchy topic because she does not trust very many people, most likely because of the lack of friends she has.
